Many people focus on their deductible, but the max out of pocket is the real number that protects your finances. When you understand it, you understand why the right combination of coverages matters.
Your max out of pocket, also called MOOP, is the most you will pay for covered medical services during a policy year. Once you reach that amount, your insurance pays 100 percent of covered services for the rest of the year.
This number is often much higher than people expect. On Marketplace plans for 2025 and 2026, it can be more than $9,000 for one person and more than $18,000 for a family. That means a serious accident or illness can push you to your limit quickly, even if you have a good plan.
The MOOP includes what you pay in deductibles, coinsurance and copays. It does not include premiums. It also does not include services your plan does not cover or bills that are out of network.
Why the MOOP matters more than the deductible
A plan with a low deductible can still leave you exposed to thousands of dollars in cost sharing. A plan with a higher deductible can still protect you well if the MOOP is reasonable. The MOOP is the true protection number. It is the amount that keeps a medical event from turning into a financial crisis.
How people reach their MOOP
People hit their MOOP more often than they think. It can happen with:
- Emergency surgery
- Hospital admissions
- Cancer treatment
- Complicated pregnancies
- Major accidents
- Ongoing specialist care
One event can push you quickly from deductible to coinsurance to max out of pocket.
Why supplemental coverage matters
Even with strong Marketplace plans, the MOOP can create a heavy financial burden. This is where supplemental coverage is valuable. Supplemental plans can help cover costs caused by accidents, hospital stays, critical illness diagnoses and other events that push people toward their MOOP.
These plans provide cash benefits that help pay medical bills, daily expenses and the unexpected costs that come with a major health event. They do not replace your primary insurance. They support it and make your total coverage more predictable.
A package of protection gives you control
When clients understand the MOOP, they understand why a single plan is not enough. A smart combination of coverages creates a safety net that protects your health and your wallet. My role is to explain the gaps, match the right products to your needs and help you build a package of protection that keeps surprises to a minimum.
If you want to review your MOOP or check whether supplemental coverage makes sense for you, we’re here to help.
